NOVEMBER 2018 NEWSLETTER

From Chaplain Nathan                                                                                                                                                   November, 2018

Dear Friends of Rescue,

I recently had the privilege of preaching the Sunday morning worship service at the church where I attend and am a member.  The passage I was given to preach was Hebrews 11:32-40, a passage I have loved for several years but it was not until I had to prepare to preach it that I truly saw and experienced the weight of the passage.  The second half of verse 35 speaks of those who suffered greatly for their faith and it says “others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection”.  As I meditated on this verse I thought “What drives a person to choose torture over their release?”  The passage answers the question: “that they might obtain a better resurrection”.  These were men and women who were looking to and living for something eternal, something much greater than themselves.  They, as Hebrews 11 says of Moses, considered the reproach of Christ as greater riches and so they willingly laid down their lives.

As we minister to men, women, and families, it is our main goal and purpose that they would see the glory and beauty of Christ.  That they would hear the Gospel and turn to Jesus in faith and repentance and therefore begin to live a life that is no longer for themselves but for Him, who for their sake died and rose again, that they would no longer live for just the here and now but that they too would live for something eternal.

As I think about all that takes place at the mission on any given day the bible studies, meals served, jails visited, clothing and furniture given away, our upcoming Thanksgiving Baskets and so much more I praise God for the amazing donors such as yourself that God has given a burden and heart for the ministry of Rescue.  We could not do what we do without you.  Our celebration banquets are right around the corner.  Would you please join us for a night of great food, encouraging music, and great testimonies about the work of Jesus Christ that you have helped to support?  A freewill offering will be accepted during the banquet so that you may give what the Lord lays on your heart to do.  We hope to see you there!

“For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.”  2 Corinthians 5:14-15

THANKSGIVING FOOD BASKETS

We are preparing to give out Thanksgiving baskets to those in need.  We will need all the fixings to put in the baskets.  As you shop, would you please consider purchasing Thanksgiving Basket fixings and a card for another family?   The shopping list includes a turkey, aluminum roasting pan, 5 lbs of potatoes, 2 cans of sweet potatoes, 2 cans of corn or beans, 1 box of dressing, 1 can of turkey gravy, 1 can of cranberry sauce, 1 can of pumpkin pie filling, and a pie crust.  The cost of all this at the time of this letter is around $40.00.  If you would prefer, we can buy what we need.  Thank you very much for helping to make a family’s Thanksgiving a blessed one.

Dear Friends of Rescue,

As we enter a winter season of Rescue, please keep us in prayer that we will have God’s wisdom and discernment as we deliver His provisions. Men, women, and families in a time of trouble can become desperate when the bitter cold adds a bite to their time of crisis. Nahum 1:7 says; “The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who take refuge in him.” The Living Water Rescue Mission is God’s provision of a refuge to many in York and the surrounding communities in their times of trouble. Thomas (not his real name) was seen by the Sheriff’s department on a cold rainy day walking along the highway trying to make it to Iowa where he hoped to find safety and work. They brought him to us for help. We gave him dry clothes and a couple nights in a warm bed, and then sent him on his way after the skies turned blue. The most important thing we gave Thomas was the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the Living Hope He provides for those who take refuge in Him.

Please join us at this year’s Celebration Banquet on November 12th and hear more about the Ministry of Rescue in York. You will be encouraged by the testimonies of our discipleship ladies and you will learn how you can partner with us to demonstrate the Love of Christ to people like Thomas.
