DECEMBER 2018 NEWSLETTER

December, 2018

From Nathan Joslin – Executive Director

Dear Friends of Rescue,

Once again, we find ourselves in the middle of the holiday season, with full bellies having just finished Thanksgiving and heading into Christmas.  This is such a precious time to me as I currently have five small children at home, all of whom are beyond excited for Christmas.  Their faces light up as they see the lights and decorations, the special holiday movies, the extra time with family, all the extra Christmas goodies around the house, and of course presents!  All these things are great, and we love to see the excitement of children but for the people we minister to at the Columbus & Living Water Rescue Mission, Christmas is often not a time of rejoicing but rather a time of pain, bitterness, and regret.

Sin ravages lives.  It destroys holidays, homes, jobs, rips apart marriages, friendships, hopes, and dreams but worst of all it separates us from the holy God who created us and brings forth death and eternal judgment.  That is why I love Christmas. It is a time of the year to celebrate in a special way the “unspeakable gift” of Jesus Christ.  A special time when we purposefully remember, rejoice, and proclaim to the world that “all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23) but “God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).  That is Good News!

For the last month I have had one Psalm continually in my mind and on my lips, Psalm 107.  Specifically, these words “Let them thank the LORD for His steadfast love, for His wondrous works to the children of man!”  These words were so important to the psalmist that he repeats them four times in this one psalm and then ends in verse 43 with this exhortation “Whoever is wise, let him attend to these things; let them consider the steadfast love of the LORD.”  Will you consider with me the steadfast love of the LORD this Christmas season?  And with that love as your motivation would you consider giving to the Columbus & Living Water Rescue Mission that we may continue to be an instrument of God’s steadfast love to the hurting and the homeless in the name of Jesus Christ?

Psalm 103:22
Bless the Lord, all His works,
In all places of His dominion.
Bless the Lord, O my soul!

How blessed to be the recipients of His works. He delivers us, He changes us, He moves us, and He calls us to declare His “Good News” to the lost and the hurting.

Robert came to us from Grand Island where his wallet, along with all his identification, was stolen. We require that all our guests submit four job applications daily. Yet for Robert, no legal identification means he is not employable. He came to my office asking for help because he had no idea what to do next. I gave him some direction, prepared a letter and some documentation for him, and sent him out to get the process started. It brought a smile to my face as he was leaving with a spring in his step he said; “Now I’m on a mission.” Sometimes just a little direction and encouragement can set someone on a new path. Pray for Robert that he will get his identification and find work. But most of all, pray that he will be transformed by the amazing grace of God.We need your help to provide emergency shelter for hurting and homeless men, women and families. As we move into our busiest time of year, we ask those who are called by God to support the work of rescue to give according to what He has placed upon your heart.

“Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased.”
